‘Tis the Season

It’s the season to be joyful and giving and that’s exactly what Towson’s women’s basketball team will be doing this week.

The Tigers will be hosting a Military Appreciation Night and Toys for Tots Drive during the women’s basketball game against the University of Maryland on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Donation bins will be located around the Towson Center Arena and fans can exchange toys for complimentary tickets to the game. Fans will also be able to snap a photo with Towson’s mascot, Doc who will be dressed as Santa Claus for the game.

Along with hosting a Military Appreciation Night, the Towson Tigers are giving a lot to not only others less fortunate than them but to their loyal fans.  The Tigers remain undefeated at home and currently have a 4-1 record, which makes any Tiger fan fill up with joy.

The Towson women’s basketball team took on the Coppin State Eagles Wednesday night at the Towson Center.  Senior forward Michelle Peebles lead her team to a 58-55 victory with a career-high of 15 points and 9 rebounds.

“I’m always happy to get a win, especially against a city rival,” said Coach Joe Mathews. “We got a couple of breaks and were able to pull it out.”

“Getting a break” is what the Tigers seem to have going for them.  Their past five games have all been games where it comes down to the last few plays to see which team will end up on top. Thankfully for the Tigers 4 times out of 5 it has been them however, will the Tigers be able to keep up their energy and stamina for the rest of the season?

“We have a history of close games,” commented Mathews.  “We do a lot of special situation work in practice but we really can’t get any better experience than playing.”

Unfortunately the Tigers did end up meeting their match Saturday against Long Island-Brooklyn in yet another close game. Long Island took the 65-63 victory over the Tigers with a layup in the last 29 seconds of the game.

The game featured 12 ties between the two squads, a pattern that Towson is used to following.  With every game they have played this season the Tigers seem to thrive off the last minute excitement.

“We have to get better at handling our composure,” said Coach Mathews. “But it’s more about us at this point in the year than it is about our opponent.”

Towson will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8 when the Tigers travel to UMES for a 2 p.m. game.

It’s about the Tigers and giving so make sure you support both and come out to their Military Appreciation Drive on December 11 and cheer on the Lady Tigers as they play against the 4 and 6 Maryland University Terps.
